Why make time for it
This conditional Wednesday plan uses C&J's 07:00 South Station departure, scheduled to arrive at the Portsmouth terminal at 08:05, and the 17:00 return, scheduled to reach South Station at 18:15. The terminal window is 535 minutes. Reserve 50 minutes each way for the COAST Route 40/local connection and wayfinding, leaving 435 destination minutes. The published 08:22 Portsmouth Transportation Center to 08:55 Hanover Station sequence explains the full outbound reserve. Recheck C&J, COAST, and the museum on the travel day.
Strawbery Banke Museum at 14 Hancock Street is the only anchor. It lists Wednesday hours of 10:00–16:00, but entry, accessibility, and the current admission price need a same-day check. The route deliberately has no second attraction and no invented taxi fare. If the local transfer, weather, walk, or museum access fails, return to or remain at the terminal for a separately confirmed Boston coach, or postpone.
Who it suits
Good for
- travelers who can make a live local-bus check
- people able to keep a fixed coach return
- a day centered on one museum
Less suited to
- anyone needing a pre-quoted all-in price
- travelers for whom the local transfer or walk is unsuitable
- a day that needs a guaranteed indoor substitute
Getting there
Driving
Driving is separate from this coach plan. Portsmouth lists meter parking at $2 per hour for the first three hours, then $5 per hour; posted rules and availability control. The driving-only allowance is not a guaranteed rate or space.
Public transit
The planning pair is South Station 07:00 to Portsmouth 08:05, then Portsmouth 17:00 to South Station 18:15. C&J, COAST, and museum prices were not frozen, so all three $0 lines are excluded placeholders. The known on-site subtotal is $35–$75 per traveler for food only, or $70–$150 for two.
Last mile
Use COAST's live Route 40 schedule and planner between the terminal and the downtown stops, then current walking guidance to Strawbery Banke. Reserve 50 minutes each way. If either connection is unsuitable, return early or postpone rather than naming an unsupported substitute.
Parking
Parking belongs only to a driving alternative. Read the meter rule at the actual space; do not add the $2–$20 planning allowance to coach totals.
A day, in order
Boston South Station
Confirm C&J's live timetable, gate, fare, and boarding instructions. The $0 coach line below is an unpriced placeholder, not a free-fare claim.
Connection: C&J coach to Portsmouth.
C&J Portsmouth terminal, 185 Grafton Drive
Arrive, identify the return boarding point, and keep the first 50 minutes for the city connection and wayfinding. Do not count this reserve as visit time.
Connection: Check COAST's live Route 40 plan toward Hanover Station or Market Square.
COAST Route 40 to downtown Portsmouth
COAST documents Route 40 and the downtown Hanover Station and Market Square stops. Use its current schedule, fare information, and trip planner rather than assuming a timed transfer.
Connection: Continue on foot from the confirmed downtown stop to Strawbery Banke.
Strawbery Banke Museum, 14 Hancock Street
Visit only after confirming same-day opening, admission, and accessibility. The museum lists Wednesday hours of 10:00–16:00. Keep this as the single core visit.
Connection: Leave early enough for the complete return reserve.
Portsmouth downtown to C&J terminal
Use the live COAST/local plan back to the terminal, with a full 50 minutes for the connection, wayfinding, and boarding lead time. Do not add another stop or rely on an unconfirmed departure.
Connection: Return to the C&J Portsmouth terminal.
C&J Portsmouth terminal
Board the planned C&J return only after reconfirming it on the day. It is scheduled to arrive at Boston South Station at 18:15.
Connection: C&J coach to Boston South Station.
