Why make time for it

This is not a fixed Chicago–Madison bus itinerary. Use it only on a confirmed non-holiday weekday when Wisconsin State Capitol access is confirmed for 08:00–18:00. Check Amtrak's official results first only as a live alternate; this guide does not claim an Amtrak or Lincoln-service itinerary. Otherwise select a Coach USA Van Galder Chicago Downtown–Madison pair that arrives by 10:30 and returns at or after 17:30, with each displayed one-way trip at 180 minutes or less.

Confirm the actual Van Galder arrival stop, fare, availability, and alerts before boarding. The official schedule identifies UW Campus at 250 N. Lake St and Dutch Mill Park & Ride as Madison stops. They are not interchangeable in this plan: if the confirmed stop is UW Campus, check the UW Campus–Capitol route; if it is Dutch Mill, check the Dutch Mill–Capitol route. Continue only when that exact live-mapped route is lawful, no more than 30 minutes each way, and has no safety or closure warning.

Those two 30-minute reserves create the 11:00–17:00 Capitol window. The Capitol is public year-round and offers free guided tours; standard Monday–Saturday tours begin at 9, 10, and 11 a.m. and 1, 2, and 3 p.m., start at the Rotunda Information Desk, and take about 45–50 minutes. The guide does not promise a tour: holiday and seasonal exceptions remain a same-day check.

The known two-person subtotal is a $70–$150 food allowance only. Carrier fare, last mile, parking, tax, gratuity, alcohol, and optional purchases are excluded. State Street Capitol Garage is not part of the transit plan; for a self-drive fallback, the City lists $1.50 per hour, subject to current terms and availability.

If the carrier pair, the weekday access condition, the exact-stop route, or Capitol access fails, defer. Do not invent a local timetable, ride-share price, replacement attraction, or guaranteed parking transfer. The useful decision is made before departure, not after arriving at a stop that cannot reach the Capitol within the protected reserve.
